About Independence Association
Independence Association’s Background
Independence Association, Inc., was founded by area families in 1967 to provide educational programming for children with mental retardation prior to mandated public education for all children. This nonprofit organization now comprises 25 programs, including 15 residences, day habilitation and in-home supports, case management, an array of employment supports and class offerings, as well as the unique and nationally-renowned Spindleworks arts program and gallery.
The Association currently serves the communities of Brunswick, Harpswell, Freeport, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Richmond, and other cities and towns within a 30-mile radius. In addition to support for individuals with mental retardation, the agency increasingly assists individuals with other disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, and mental illness. It is also the agency’s role to act as an advocate for individuals so that they can achieve recognition and acceptance in their respective community and in their life’s activities. None of this work would be possible without the Association’s many partnerships with area businesses, community organizations, committed citizens and volunteers.
In short, Independence Association creates new opportunities and opens the door for adults and children with developmental disabilities to fully participate in our mid-coast community. We invite everyone to discover who we are, celebrate what we’ve achieved, and join us in our commitment to supporting a vibrant, collaborative and inclusive community with area businesses.
Independence Association assists adults and children with disabilities in obtaining a full and inclusive life in their chosen community.
Independence Association strives to promote inclusion in communities through ongoing public education and individualized program Supports. This is accomplished by the identification and removal of physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent or hinder access or participation in community-based employment, housing, recreation, social or other activities.
